This course is designed to introduce students to New Testament exegesis and interpretation with a particular focus on the exegesis of the synoptic Gospels. While students will be given a survey of various critical and interpretive approaches, they will be taught to apply a transformative composition critical method through the application of practical exegesis steps. The course includes detailed exegesis of select passages from the synoptic Gospels, with an emphasis on the Gospel of Matthew. Students will apply the methods learned in an exegesis project.

ESZ301 is designed to introduce students to the basic methods of OT exegesis, the principles operative in exegeting biblical narrative and a five-step procedure applicable to the setting of Central and Eastern Europe.
The course introduces students to a contextually appropriate exegetical method, the key issues in Esther research and the method of narrative poetics (close reading).
The Hebrew Book of Esther is read in an explicit (Christian) theological manner). I argue that the author strongly implies that divine providence may be relied upon while, at the same time, stressing the need for humans to be at the right place and at the right time. Various episodes and narrative sequences prompt theological reflections on Vashti as a role model for women, biblical perspectives on finding a spouse, the humanity of Haman, proper ways of responding to authoritative texts, faith as risk-taking, as well as the shapes of (incomplete) stories/lives in character formation.
The student's main assignment is to write an exegetical research paper on Esther 7:1-10. Answer the following question: how does Esther achieve her success in this passage?
